Facts & Misconceptions, cont'd

"Help! Help! I'm "stuck" in hypnosis and can't come back." Don't worry, you can't get "stuck" in hypnosis. You may enjoy the peace and serenity so much that you just want to stay in the trance state for a while. Many people, when listening to their hypnosis cd's at night, simply fall asleep. They then awaken when it is time to be awake.

Scientists are just begining to realize the benefits of hypnosis. Hypnosis has been with us and used since the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians. It was recognized as a powerful tool for anesthesia, healing and self-improvement since the mid 1800's. James Esdaile, M.D.(1808-1859), a Scottish surgeon in India, performed major operations using as he called it "magnetic sleep" as the sole anesthetic (not that I recommend this use today). But self-hypnosis, when properly learned, is a technique used in preparation for surgery, for promoting healing and for reducing risk, as described by Stanley Fisher, Ph.D, in his wonderful book, Discovering The Power of Self-Hypnosis (Newmarket Press: NY). In fact, the American Medical Association sanctioned the use of hypnosis in 1958.

While in hypnosis, people always tell the truth. A person who has reason to lie may create lies while in hypnosis. They may fill-in gaps in their memories with false material which supports their own self-interest.

Facts & Misconceptions

Let's Begin.....Please click on my Youtube animation.

"You are getting sleepy, very sleepy. SLEEP." From the moment James Braid, M.D. (1795-1860) coined the term hypnosis, derived from the Greek word hypnos meaning sleep, people have misunderstood what exactly hypnotism is about. Contrary to sleep, hypnosis is a relaxed state of focused concentration. Electroencephalogram (EEG) readings taken during hypnosis show a high incidence of alpha wave activity which indicates a relaxed yet attentive brain.

"And now, whenever you see the color red, you will QUACK LIKE A DUCK." Yes, you will quack like a duck....if that is what you wish to do. A hypnotist cannot make you do anything that you think to be unacceptable. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

"Hey buddy, you want to buy a bridge?" Hypnosis has been popularized by fiction and movies that show the "weak-minded" or gullible person as the one most susceptible to hypnosis. Research shows people who have affective or thought disorders rarely go into trance as it is difficult for them to sustain concentration. It takes imagination, creativity, desire and motivation to become hypnotized. Studies indicate that most "normal" individuals can induce trance for positive outcomes.
